Soldiers' Monument (aka Civil War Monument)

Postcard of Soldiers' Monument

Dedicated on October 10, 1908, the “Soldiers Memorial of 1902” was erected to honor the soldiers’ lives lost during the Civil War.  The program began with a concert by the American Band with J. M. Fulton, as their leader. Following an invocation by Rev. William T. Holmes of the xxx Church, Buell Heminway, President of the Soldiers Monument Association, welcomed guests and visitors.

In the park dedicated to Marian Munson, the Civil War Monument is a tangible symbol of the respect given to those who served. At 36 feet, it is one of the largest of its kind and is also significant because it is only one of a select few that lists the names of servicemen of color. Other monuments pay tribute to those soldiers, but not by name.

Designed by Thomas Phillips & Company, and crafted by John Williams and the American Bronze Foundry Company

In Commemoration of the Patriotism and Valor of the men of Watertown, who, in the hour of peril, offered their lives that the Republic might live, thus winning the gratitude of their fellow-citizens, the admiration of succeeding generations and a place among the nation’s heroes; this monument is erected that their example may serve as an inspiration to heroic deeds in all coming time.
